[Approved] Mythic's Character Application (Niolasse Faelduin) - Mythic - 09-12-2018

OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION

In Game Name (IGN):

How did you find us? (Forums, friend, previous member, etc…)
I had originally found you guys way far back, about two years ago. I’ve been busy but have finally settled down so I can finally apply!
About You:
Well, I’m almost twenty-four years old. I’m a technician of varying specialties and I’m relearning how to art! I love roleplay and am very passionate about it- sometimes people think I’m weird for it! I could go on and on about that but this isn’t a resume, so I wont. I own and take care of horses which I ride quite a bit! Ah, that’s about all I can think of, but feel free to ask me any questions!

CHARACTER INFORMATION

Name:
Niolasse Faelduin
Age:
21
Gender:
Female

Appearance:
Níolassë stands at a middling height and build, a bit shorter than your average human male, and a bit more built than your average human female. Her nut brown skin spans her entire body, but only the skin which is drawn taut around her boyish complexion is decorated with a pinch of dark freckles. Her face is angled with sharp proportion, though mildly rounded at her cheeks, and set into such is a large, slanted set of almond shaped, golden eyes which are almost always soft and kind. Below these rests a bombas, thin, pointed nose, followed by a set of dark, supple lips which when smiling revealing striking rows of white, meticulously kept teeth. She almost always wears her usual outfit of a soft set of a tunic and leggings, the former being a dark green while the latter being a slate gray. They are ragged in nature due to her travels and have stitching inlain to them which showcases colors of orange, brown, and a lighter green. She tends to wear a flat set of thongs upon her feet which have leather straps which wrap around and climb up her leg as vines would. Her untamed brown hair reaches her waist, though several long strands that she’s missed have a tendency to wave around in the humid winds, granting just that much more of a seemingly wild look to her.

Personality:
Níolassë can be described as a firecracker. Though intelligent and thoughtful, she rarely lets herself be packed to the rigid embrace of restraint. If she feels something needs to be said and people won’t kill her for it, she will say it openly and proudly. She is a woman of the wilds, prefering to keep her personal items and secrets buried under an upturned rootball where she sleeps at night. This isolation is safety for her, as people tend to scare her deeply in ways she can’t verbalize, but oftentimes her actions may display such a notion- be it violent or timid. For all her seemingly endless energy, she is reserved when it comes to plenty of things about who she is, why she thinks the way she does, and otherwise things she feels she might have to explain or defend. These are aspects that she doesn’t like exploring unless with a trusted individual as many of the times she doesn’t know the answers either. The unknown can scare her but her curiosity drags her out to the open. She’s prone to help disengage a fight unless they really upset her, then she will enter the brawl with a feral ferocity only a few have seen. Overall, she is kind and at least tries to be understanding to the best of her ability.

Backstory:
It started out with a smile.

A gentle, pristine, toothless smile that shone almost as bright as the crystalline, golden god rays which meandered through the forest canopy onto those below. The leaves above waved to and fro, blocking the light and showing it once more in a gentle game of ‘peek-a-boo’ to the newborn child, displaying their radiant expanse in all of their precious glory. The newborn watches it all with wonder, her large, slanted, golden eyes peering out at this new and exciting world with nothing but confused awe. The first face that face saw was that of a gentle comfort, tired from some unknown exertion, but the newborn knew that face to be family. She did not cry, she did not fight this new world that was very, very different from the rocking, warm expanse of a womb; she merely accepted, and with a gentle burble of contentedness, she fell asleep to the sound of the leaves high above waving hello and to the gentle song emanating from her mother, lilting and bending with tinkling trill, twinkling in its own right as the stars do each night as they enter their celestial dance. An echo of a word reverberated through her tiny dreams, “Níolassë.”

Next came the mayhem.

In the years following the birth of young Níolassë, the girl granted their small Elunai, or village among the forests, with the gift of seemingly endless energy. The girl, at the age of three now, would run, dance, and leap for seemingly little to no reason other than just to do it. Secretly, however, the young one was mimicking the paths of the stars, sun, and the moon; they never stop moving, why should she? She would do so, climbing the trees, running through the tall grass in the forests they called home, swimming across the ponds interspersed in the miles around; nothing would stop her. Unless, of course, she got tired, which occurred every day. She would slink home with leaves, twigs, and sap coating the fluffed expanse of her now long and curled hair, a long face and tired eyes greeting the tiny family once more as she opened the door to the home among their trees, and those same eyes would finally shut as she lay upon her mother’s lap, her hair ever so gently being combed.

It wasn’t long until the attitude started.

Every morning, the shrill tone of a mother calling her daughter down to wake her up would ring out from the trees, which was promptly ignored until the fourth call. Like clockwork, the now eight year old girl would drag herself out of her linens, don her usual attire of thin, soft cloths of earthen tones, and somehow make it down the stairs of their humble home to greet her family with a not-so-cheery, angst laden, elongated “Whhaaatt.” The response is usually along the lines of “Up and up! Time for work. Your food is upon the table!” Though on occasion it may stray anywheres from “Were you out late again last night? We’ve told you time and time again not to be out after dark!” or “Be polite! Others will not be as kind as I!” The response from the young one was always silence. Less than an hour later, she would be standing amidst her few peers of the same age, sighting her large, golden eyes down the knock of a bow, aiming at a straw man. Release! The arrow whistles down the range and embeds itself into the leg of the target, eliciting a gentle grin from the girl, but expressed disappointment from the teacher. Even at eight years of age and experience, the girl had realized she still had much to learn, and she did not like it. Though that all would change in the coming years as her hearing became something ungodly sensitive; even the slightest of sounds would seem as a large crash to her and cause her pain. Everyone celebrated, but she found hard reason to do so as well.

After which came love.

The truest of loves, as all fifteen year olds experience. ‘This is the one!’ she would think to herself every time she saw the lad. She would burble in excitement every time he walked towards her with his suave smile, his bow slung across his back, his black hair waving down to his backside. Níolassë would melt a little inside each time she clapped her large eyes upon him, and would dream of the day they would be married, which they would, she had no doubts about that. They were both of age to attend the weekly celebrations of their Elunai, where an exceedingly large feast would be celebrated and attended. Traders of native and foriegn origin would attend these celebrations, much to the confusion of our young Níolassë, whom prior had never seen another that looked so radically different from she- white skin and red hair, how strange? Níolassë and her future husband would run around these celebrations, taste the berry wines when allowed to, eat to their fill as expected of them who supplied the meats from their hunts, and would sneak to the back to explore their own innocence in their developing sexualities. Unbeknownst to her, however, love is as fleeting as life itself, and soon she found herself forgetting the young lad, much to his own dismay. They both dealt with this striking revelation in their own ways; the lad tuning himself more into his inner warrior, intent on becoming a fierce hunter, and the lass pondering what more she wished from her secluded life in the burrows of their lovely Elunai. Curious as she was, she wished to know the whys and hows of both love and life, which soon blossomed into her growing interest in the fields of philosophy, religion, and science.

In which followed in the crisis.

The intensity in which she studied rewarded her with a crisis of which, for the first time, she questioned who and what she was. She would ask herself that question again and again, and even as the years passed, she was stuck with the same question that would remain unanswered; “Who am I, and why am I here?” Even now at the age of twenty-one the question taunts her and hides the answer from her gentle mind. Her studies grew deeper and wider to search for this answer, but her efforts were rewarded only with a plethora of more questions. Her tender mind was assaulted with morbid curiosities tagged with whispering thoughts of what life means, and it occurred to her that the only way to find the answer was more information; the answer was all information. The information she had now was abundant in quantity, having had near her fill in the educational standards of the Elunai in which she resided. It was not enough though. More often than not, she would find herself staring at the borders of the Elunai in silence, alone, hugging her legs to her chest as thoughts assailed her from all sides. Finally, they coalesced into one brilliant ray of thought which shone to her as the light through the leaves did when she first emerged into this world; what is outside?

Which then lead to the decision.

There she stands now, a tall, lithe, womanly figure with the same boyish smile, sense of adventure, and curiosity she had at three years old, bounding through the grass which comforted her so. The self-respect she had at the age of eight is manifested differently, less impolite, but it resides within her drive and courage to step out of the woods. Her love at fifteen is there, though wider, as it is now her love of the whole wild world around her that may beget what she wishes to experience. And finally, the questions of her twenties, the ones that scream ‘What if?’ and ‘How?’ have all grown in intensity, but with them she carries the luggage of an educated mind that is still searching for the beauty in the quiet of an answer. All of it has lead up to this moment, her standing tall and proud at the edge of the Elunai, a pack upon her back and a staff in her hand, braced with the essentials given unto her as is her right of passage. The questions have become her companions now, her driving and guiding force that will allow her to become more than she ever dreamt. Religion! Music! Art! Science! Language! Culture! It all is soon to come.

And it all begins with the first step forwards the trading boat destined for the far off town of Nightveil.

Capabilities:
Niolasse is versed at a few aspects of the Major Skills of  Wilderness, Miscellaneous and Knowledge. The specifics are listed below!

Survival (Bushcraft/Gathering)- Competent
Due to her upbringing, she was loathe become a warrior of any sort, and while she stomached the lessons, the thought of spending her time in the woods hunting for others bored her to absolute death, or at the very least made her jokingly wish for it. So, following in her mother’s footsteps, she took to learning the trade of herablism, which allowed her to explore the gathering side of her society and how to best use the herbs and resources they found out beyond the borders and even in their own gardens. Her own curiosity certainly helped her understanding of Bushcraft, allowing her to become an excellent survivalist as she ventured out for beyond the borders of her Elunai under the tutelage of friend and family. Eventually she began to head out on her own, returning days or even weeks later with plants of every variety to aid the village in her way.

Herbalism - Competent

This skill ties in very closely to the Bushcrafting skill. They largely go hand in hand. Certain fibrous vines can be split and braided into rope, there are a multitude of plants that are able to be eaten or processed into valuable tonics and salves. This skill was learned in tandem with the ability to survive in the wood without support, and it lead to an understanding of medicine from her mother. Both of these skills are continuously learned and practiced, as she spends most of her time outside city walls and enjoying what the world has to offer her as opposed to what a merchant can.

Alchemy - Apprentice

Alchemy in her Elunai was split into two categories- one of which detailed the production of medicines, the other was veering towards chemistry. In this case, her understanding of medicine has some depth to it. She is aware of how to make tonics and poultices that helps with infection, rashes and irritation, upset stomachs, even herbal supplements and teas that help with contraception. She won't be turning anyone into frogs anytime soon, but if they limp up with a gash or broken arm you bet she's able to at least help!

Chemistry - Apprentice

The second part to her alchemy skills details the chemical side to the spectrum. This is something she is rather versed in, and while nowhere near what a master can do, she knows her way around an alembic. She's familiar with the concepts and usages of all the essentials oils such as Aqua Fortis, Oil of Vitriol, Aqua Regina, and all that good stuff I don't particularly need to list. She's familiar with resolving non-reactive minerals from solutions created from nitre and ground ore or organic material and is knowledgeable in many of the natural acids to boot. While she won't be creating any explosives any time soon, she certainly can help a smith be more efficient with their extraction processes or aid a chef in balancing the acidity of certain stews, broths or gravies.

Items:
As of current she only has her basic items on her. Her yew bow with a drawstring made from collected hair from her favorite horse coated in the sinew of various hunts and glued rightly from an adhesive made from the roofs of trout’s mouths. The bow is decorated in a thin vinework painted by her mother. She has her granite mortar and pestle, several small bottles, her flint and steel, an iron dagger, a set of metal utensils, an iron bowl for boiling water and all around eating or preparation of tonics and pastes, her walking staff which has been fire hardened and is a decent whacking stick, her journal and finally her leather satchel which carries everything above mentioned and hangs from her shoulder to rest loosely at her hip. Anything more than that are the clothes on her back!

Additional Comments:
Her backstory doesn’t have too much of a mention regarding dates due to the format of it being a short story. Her Elunai was isolated enough to the point where most of the events in the surrounding continents and islands just simply didn’t affect them. If it weren’t for the traders they would have been left completely in ignorance. I’m not 100% certain what year it is now, but judging from what I could extrapolate from the posts on the cheat sheet, it seems that every year IC is three months ooc. From there I can guess the year is somewhere around AV 53-54? Due to this, going on what I’ve found, she would have been born right at the end of the Civil War in AV 33.

Hey Mythic! Thanks for applying. I'll be doing a quick run-over your application. I have a few notes and questions I wanted to get cleared up.

Skill Cleanup

I like how you listed each of the skills as competent. You show that you read the skill guide.

I want to get a little clean-up and simplification in, however. You seem to mix a few skills together into one category, or it feels bobbled together.

I would say your "Misc." skill feels more like herbology. You list this as a sort of alchemy/chemistry term, but I would avoid that. Unless she's making advanced medicines, it seems weird for it to be called that.

The knowledge skill also seems to combine a lot. I think the bow-crafting makes sense given her background. Although you also have things that would be rather advanced given the time-frame with mimic, such as understanding of gravity and reflection. I would go as far to say that those concepts likely aren't too well understood by even non-isolated tribal people. - Although a dedicated engineer, scientist, etc. would likely know these things.

In knowledge you also mention things that tie into chemistry, which seems a bit advanced given background. I think all of this ties better into my second point.

Backstory Dissonance

I'm a little confused on your character's ability and upbringing. From what it seems like, she seems to be someone raised in an unadvanced tribe with little connection to the mechanical and scientific world. Although now she's taken an interest in it and really wants to explore outside her tribe to learn more. I really like this idea. It's a natural enabler of character growth.

My problem is that it seems that the tribe is able to teach a solid and comprehensive understanding of sciences despite supposedly lacking information. Perhaps a slight tweak to lesser her current understanding of science would fit better? She doesn't have to be completely ignorant of course. You mention her mother took a similar route in life. Although I think having relatively strong knowledge of chemistry, alchemy, and so on, doesn't seem justified in the backstory properly.

Hearing

This is a quick one. Can you elaborate on her hearing condition for me? You mention that she suddenly developed highly sensitive hearing but it's not mentioned afterwords.

Thank you again for applying man. You can choose to elaborate, explain, correct, or fix anything in a format you're comfortable with. Just please make the changes easily noticeable.

RE: Mythic's Character Application (Niolasse Faelduin) - Mythic - 11-12-2018

Hello Fire!

Thanks for the reply! It sounds like most of the issues are a relatively easy fix! However, I wanted to explain a few things and see if that clarifies the issues beyond the skills. When I first spoke to Zarkaylia about the need for specific lore, she said that I could write it later. I feel like that's a part of the confusion regarding the weird allocation of interest towards her little Elunai. I should have clarified for review or added a bit more to it, apologies for that!

To give a quick rundown of their knowledge, the Elunai have forsaken mechanical research as per religious descision from the matriarchal council of the settlement. Mechanical progress is synonymous with attempting to become god's, considering it utilizes the work from fuel not able to be processed by the body, which is considered holy. Because of this, focus on the natural properties of the world are favored, resulting in a heavier focus and subsequent Fuller understanding of the natural portions of the biological, which is mainly alchemical for both industrious purposes and medical. When I say alchemical I mean it in the true ancient terminology as the medieval forerunner to chemistry. As in, alembics, mortar and pestle, nitre, salt of amun, oils, etc. The original usages that went beyond the scope of transmutation- especially considering only the true wackjobs actually tried to transmute anything. Since alchemy in this regard is not true chemistry it is naturally going to be flawed, which I do know and look forwards to RPing out. Their knowledge into this isn't particularly impressive, as most of what I've described was fairly common knowledge for even an apprentice alchemist. Their elunai did advance beyond that but hi sis knowledge that Niolasse will have to learn on her own.

Now, as for her hearing, I didn't mention any more of it just because I meant for it to be a staple for the future additions beyond that. It can be assumed that this sensitivity has persisted even up to the point of her arrival. As for the understanding on basic physics, I didn't mean she has an understanding of euclidean geometry as much as I had meant to state that she knows things go down and light gets brighter when shiny things are involved. I really added that to give insight into her personality and chosen foci for education and philosophy.

Either way I could have added in more information to her backstory regarding this.

As for the skills, I'll touch then up as soon as I can. Im hoping my explanation can give a bit of insight as to why I kept so rigidly to the actual skill structure for organizations sake. Either way expect a change!

Thanks!
