[Paused] The Return of Drake - Tigady - 27-12-2013

Drake Returns!

http://www.mesalia.net/forum/showthread.php?tid=171

He has been gone for roughly five years now, and he’s been a very busy man in that time. Drake has spent just about all of his five years on a merchant ship trading between the mainlands and forbidden lands, and has used that time to study under the merchants and get his hands on the trade of, well, trade.

He was always good at talking to people, and negotiating, so it wasn’t too hard for him to pick up. Most of his time was spent building up contacts and people he could work with. He never stopped practicing with the war axe Mitty made for him, and he never stopped listening out for news from Ravenna.

Over five years he’s become rather accomplished, having made a decent amount of money and just as quickly spending it, he’s learned to let go of his grief over Nicole, Conrad, and Ezri, and upon hearing bad rumors about Ravenna that would no doubt drive any merchant away (see Lance), which he no doubt took as horse shit, he decided he could make a nice profit going back to his home, seeing as no other merchant would touch it.

---------------

Change Log:

Age Change:
Drake is now 26, after four years in Ravenna and five years away.

Skill Change:
-Drake now has a Competent skill with his axe and hammer for fighting, raised from a beginner/novice level he had when he left.
-Drake now has a competent skill trading, he learned it quickly as he had great teachers and no other things to focus on, as well as previously built up skills with negotiation.
-Drake now has beginner skills gardening, this is not something he learned while away, Nicole taught him before he left, but I never got around to adding it to the character sheet.

Inventory Update:
Drake left with his axe and hammer, and the clothes on his back. He now brings back a few choice items he gained with his five years as a merchant as well as the axe and hammer.

-Nicer clothes: Drake found he has a taste for nice coats, and collected one or two.
-Citrus Cologne. Yep, Drake has discovered that it pays to not smell like shit, and has started wearing citrus-y cologne lightly as needed, and washing more. He brings one medium sized bottle.
-Pipe & Tobacco: Contrary to the whole smelling nice thing, Drake has taken up pipe smoking, and brings a simple pipe & a small tin of tobacco for it.

Description Update:
He’s gotten a little bigger, and just a dash taller. Before, he had a boyish charm, now he has grown into a more or less handsome and confident man. His features are sharp and well-toned, and he continues to rock the slight stubble, however he also has rather unappealing calluses and generally rougher skin from working on a ship, handling thick ropes and getting sea spray all over his everything.

Personality Update:
Drake has gotten far less naive, and far more pessimistic. He sees most things in a negative light and always likes to plan based on the worst case scenario, he questions everything from the gods to his friends, and he's definitely gotten greedier and more of an opportunist over the years.

---------------

Name: Drake Jakob
Age: 26 (23rd)

Skills:
Adept Ship Construction;
-Average Carpentry, Novice Weaving, Average Sailing & Rigging
-Novice/Moderate Balalaika
Competent Axe/Hammer Combat
Competent Trade & Logistics
Beginner Gardening

Personality:
-Uninterested. The next closest word is quiet, but he isn’t particularly quiet at all. He simply lacks the amount of interest required to be loud. If it doesn’t involve him, or he has no reason to care for something, he simply doesn’t.

-Tidy, everything must be neat, everything must be orderly. This doesn’t come to say he has an abundance of table manners or anything like that, only that he prefers to keep things clean and squared away.

-Blunt, he isn’t afraid to speak his mind. He knows there are limits to this, but if he has something on his mind, he’ll make it clear.

-Workaholic, speaks for itself. His favorite way to relax is to stop relaxing and get some work done. Once everything he wants to get accomplished for a day is finished, then he may rest.

-Objective minded, everything he does falls into a purpose or interest for him. He doesn’t do anything he doesn’t find useful in some way, even when teasing someone or flirting he is keeping objectives in mind such as gaining insight into the mind of his subject or making an impression.

-Sarcastic, a quick wit and decisive mind mix together to make both snap decisions and a certain tendency towards sarcastic remarks. Especially if he isn't taking something seriously, though a string of sarcastic statements does not always mean he isn't taking something seriously, though it can often be confused for such.

-Perceptive & Observational, he pays close attention to details and takes notice of a lot of minute things others pay no mind to, which helps him drastically in construction.

-Slightly Pretentious. Self explanatory, it helps in some cases, hurts in many others. He can keep it under wraps when he needs to.

-Greedy. He’s an opportunist. Over five years as a merchant, Drake has realized there is no way to make things fair for everyone… And has started seeing life as one big fight, every deal and every trade a struggle to take more then he gives and win, rather than a happy and honest transaction. Long story short, he’s become less naïve.

-Pessimistic. Drake has more reason than most to see life from a dark and negative angle, and as he turned from a boy to a man that darkness in his eyes matured, and the hopeful side went away.

Description:
The twenty-six year old stands at about six feet even, weighs around 160 pounds, has short dark brown hair, and intensely focused dark brown eyes. His skin is rough and bears a slight tan, he spends most of his time outdoors working. He has many tool scars around his hands and arms, the mark of rougher working class. He could easily be called handsome, with strong arms and good posture, and sharp bold features, but a lifetime of work leaves him with scars and rough skin that gives him more of a scruffy then a fair appeal.

Back Story (Before Ravenna):
After Ravenna:
Drake had made friends in Ravenna, and he had built up a good name for himself. He had gotten a lot done, and he had a home. He made a new best friend, Nicole, and she always encouraged him to work on the land around the town, making it beautiful and fruitful again instead of forests and ruins. He learned some of the basics of gardening from her, and she kept him happy. It wasn’t too long before he fell in love, but she was always with different men then him. He rebuilt as much as he could with William, fixing the inn and several homes, and he even joined the guard and started learning to fight. He even built a boat for Ezri. He worked hard, and got a lot done, but as his friends started to die or leave, his happiness chipped away. He didn’t feel satisfied with Ravenna anymore, not with the loss around him, so he moved on.

He took the next ship out, looking for work, and before long he had become a deck hand on a small merchant ship. The captain was a man by the name of Barnabas, and he had high opinions of Drake, it wasn’t long before he had started teaching him about the merchant trade in rapid hands on courses. Drake took well to the instruction, and he focused whole heartedly on the education Barnabas provided to him, his only other practice being a few hours training with his hammer and axe a day to keep sharp. After all, there are people like Ezri out on the seas. Over time Drake started to mature and grow less naïve, letting go of his hope for an equal and perfect fair system, and started growing greedy and focused on keeping himself and his people afloat regardless of what it cost others. He still believed in keeping things fair, deep down, but in the end he knows that for him to win, someone else has to lose.

After a few years, Drake started doing rather well, but he always spent his money shortly after earning it, he was of the opinion that money was useless sitting around piling up and collecting dust. He invested, he had a good time, and he spent plenty on himself, whatever it cost to keep him and his ship mates happy, be it new clothes and tobacco, or a trip to a bar to drink and flirt with pretty girls.

Regardless of how well things were going for him, though, Drake always kept his ears open for news or word from Ravenna, always listening for what was going on. Eventually, he heard that all the trade with Ravenna had stopped. Rumors and cruel words were passed about the people he once called friends. Other merchants were starting to believe they were murderous savages because of the stories Lance spun up… But Drake knew better, and if no other merchants were going to Ravenna… Then this was his chance to go home, and make a real business for himself. It was the most logical next step in his career, so he took it, saying goodbye to Barnabas and setting sail for Ravenna.

RE: [New] The Return of Drake - Michelle - 27-12-2013

I'll properly grade when you have the skin. Until then, this can be a WIP.

But a few quick suggestions:
1. Please repost the entire submission/character sheet with the changes made. This will make it easier for me, and will make things faster for you.
2. If one were gone for five years, I'd expect a change in personality, too.

That's all for now. Good luck, and let me know when you're ready.

RE: [WIP] The Return of Drake - Tigady - 27-12-2013
