The transference of energy isn't really the issue its the stability of the product. Gunpowder for our lore is extremely volatile, in a way that is completely unlike IRL gunpowder. Cramming it into a gun would not be enough space for the reaction to go off properly and fire, and the amount needed to make something larger like a cannon would be so unstable it'd be more likely to go off before the cannon ball is loaded and absolutely would go off while packing.
So essentially the nature of explosives in our setting only shares features and functions of IRL explosives or gunpowder, but that's it. The vary nature of the gunpowder in setting is a fantasy element exclusive to our lore.
