The Connors' Farewell
#1
Pausing of Ezri & Rook Connors

Ezri and her husband set sail to put the newly titled ship, Snow, through her paces. The intent was to see what she was both capable of, and if she was safe to bring their family aboard. They traveled the coast heading south into warmer waters. The ship performed admirably, with no real issues.

The day they were to turn back they noticed abandoned fields and people walking the beach. Rook and Ezri decided to press on, hoping to establish trade for Ravenna and kill two birds in their single trip out. Sure enough they found a small dusty settlement at the edge of the unforgiving desert. They docked the Snow, and as luck would have it there was another ship in port. Ezri went to speak with the captain while Rook headed into the town to find something to bring back for Lapis as he’d promised.

The merchant seemed excited to hear there was a town to the north, he’d said that a drought had been harsh to the lands they were in now, and the people hadn’t anything to trade for some time. So the merchant made plans to head for Ravenna immediately, and Ezri went to find her husband, now knowing his search was in vain.

Ezri found blood and bodies, cleaved and cut by the expertly crafted sword Rook wielded. Ezri drew her own sword and ran to join her husband as the guard for the settlement set out to arrest him. Ezri didn’t care why, or what Rook might have done, she would not allow anyone to harm him. She cut down a young man who came at her with a butchers knife, she turned towards Rook again, just to get smashed in the face with the pommel of a sword. In the moment of madness that followed Ezri was grabbed and the guard captain threatened her life to get Rook to put down his weapon. Rook complied, and they were taken to what was the guard house. Where Ezri and Rook got their first look at wanted posters brought all the way from the mainlands. They’d been captured for the sizable reward that may just save the starving village. For once in Ezri’s life she finally appreciates the caliber of person it takes to be a good guard captain like Zarkaylia.

Rook and Ezri remain in the cell for ages, days drag by without number before finally the guard opens the cell they were in. The couple and the weapons taken from them were being taken to the dock to await pick up. And when Ezri saw all the masts of the incoming ship breach the horizon she knew that getting on that ship would be death. It was huge, a galleon that would house over 100 men. Convinced they’d not survive a day on the ship coming for them she cast a subtle signal to her husband. Then dove into the guard captain shoulder first, knocking him back into Rooks guard. As they staggered Rook ripped his sword from the hands of a third while kicking him off the pier. The men drew their swords but Ezri was already running at full sprint to the Snow. Rook did his best to hold them off in spite of his hands being bound together. Ezri smashed her right hand against the rail, intentionally dislocating the thumb to slide her ropes off as she scrambled across the deck to open the sails.

Rook held back the guard until Ezri’s whistle called him back as the Snow started to leave the dock. He scrambled aboard and cut the lines to the pier on his way, freeing the ship and setting sail. The large galleon that was inbound saw them break away from the dock and adjusted course to pursue. Thankfully, the Snow was faster, and rode the winds and sea much easier then the huge ship that trailed them.

The Connors came to the realization that their supplies had been plundered while they sat in that cell. Ezri tried every trick she knew to shake off the looming ship. But it didn’t matter where they went, the galleon would not halt it’s pursuit. So the husband and wife were faced with a choice, return to Ravenna, and bring with them these men haunting them for crimes long past, or run. Run, and lead them away and pray they never figure out what was left behind.

They had to make the difficult choice quickly, both knew there was nothing they wouldn’t do for the sake of their children, even if it meant leaving them. So they turned about one last time, heading as far south as quickly as they could, in hopes of losing or defeating their mysterious pursuers... or die trying.

IC information:
As of right now, all anyone knows is that the Connors went for a sail for what was for a week but months passed and they never returned. A merchant ship arrived after two weeks and would offer only ‘A fuzzy haired blonde woman gave directions’. IC its pretty easy to assume the Connors either abandoned their children or died at sea.
