[Trashed] Application of QuickChasm
#1
In Game Name(IGN)
QuickChasm

Why do you want to join?
I want to get back into Minecraft roleplaying (haven't played Minecraft since 1.5, after my last server became inactive)

Do you have any RP'ing experience?
I have played a fair amount of MMORPGs before, but have only done 'actual roleplaying' in Guild Wars 2 and a few serious RP servers (but most have closed).

Tell us a bit about yourself
I'm going to be a sophomore in high school (or Year 11) after this semester, and I love video games (especially RPG types), though school has taken a toll on my gaming time (that's why I haven't played Minecraft for 6 months). I played computer games since I was very small, and they have pretty much grown on me for the past 1 1/2 decade or so. Other than gaming, I have some other sports and hobbies that I do occasionally (to keep me sane from schoolwork) like basketball, soccer/football, guitar, skateboarding, etc, and yeah, that's pretty much it! (oh, and I'm male, almost forgot!)

Your Character Biography
Aaron X was born and raised as a scavenger, a survivalist. His mother and father had fled to the fringes of the Forbidden Lands, but far enough to remain within the vicinity of the Middle Realms as a means of escaping the dangers of the civil war. As the Mesalians clashed against each other, Aaron and his parents survived in the safety of the unknown for a few years, living off the scarce foods that were found there, in hopes of lasting until peace was made between the races.

Aaron grew up without any knowledge of the outside world, however. His parents, fearing for his safety, did not allow him any education of the Realms or other races, and he grew up knowing the Forbidden Lands as home, and home as the Forbidden Lands.

Despite their well-picked locations, bands of refuging Xitians fleeing from the grasps of the Middle Realms soon arrived and pillaged them, taking the lives of Aaron's parents for scraps of rotten fruits. Aaron was enslaved by what he thought to be 'red-eyed monsters', a small group of Xitian convicts, from whom he had aquired his last name from (the group replaced his last name with X for Xitian, to represent him as their slave). He was often beat and starved, and was forced to learn to survive himself. He would risk his life sneaking away every so often to steal from the other groups of Xitians that travelled with his owners, and hide his loot from the Xitians simply to survive. He kept his mouth shut, as he had learned to do the hard way, but silently practiced his own skills secretly. By the time he was 15, he hid, stole, scavenged like a master (a master in relation to his age, not literally 'mastered' these skills); he had become
whatever he needed to be to survive.

As his confidence grew, he started peeking into the journals of the Xitians when they were away, and practiced his swordsmanship with makeshift dummies and swords (crafted from sticks and branches he had gathered) that he hid well away from the Xitians' knowledge. The journals taught him about the three different races, different realms, portals, and the Middle Realms that his parents had disclosed from him for his safety.

He had decided to return to the Middle Realms (from the fringes) and learn more about what had happened since the civil war had broken out (the Xitians' journals did not tell him about any recent history, since they had ran away from the Middle Realms once the civil war broke out).

He gathered some of his hidden rations in a bag, and snuck out. He traversed around for around 6 months, in search of signs of civilization, surviving from the skills he had aquired from his trials during his teenage years, and here he was.

Specify your character's skills:
Thieving:
(he can steal from people if they're away, but may face some difficulty robbing people; he can possibly intimidate some, but would try to avoid unwanted attention most of the times)

Hiding:
(can dig small shelters/dwellings in mountains or underground to hide himself or his belongings; following hidden chest or protected area rules of course)

Craftsmanship:
(creating basic weapons, tools, armor (leather or stone))

Swordsmanship:
(can use swords or tools as weapons due to practice (diamond or iron may be too heavy, for example, since he hasn't practiced with real swords before))

Scavenging:
(includes hunting animals, skinning, collecting plants, apples, cocoa beans, etc.; not good at cooking however)

Do your character bring anything to the setting (part from clothes)?
A small bag (with non-game food), a mask to cover his face and to intimidate others (I have a skull-like mask on my skin), a stolen Xitian journal (to go back on some lore or commands)

Anything you'd like to add:
Aaron's lack of knowledge of the outside world can represent my lack of knowledge for anything added to MC since 1.5 (like horses, I don't know anything about them) and also my lack of knowledge of this server (and how it works; I have forgotten a lot of plugin commands, for example).

Hi, Torp. Or is it Quick? Or is it Chasm? Or is it all of the above?
Either way, hi, and welcome to Mesalia. I’m Michelle, and I’ll be helping you with the whitelisting process.

Before we start, I thought I should help clarify the misconceptions you seem to be having about Mesalia, so that you know what you’re getting yourself into in terms of expectations. You don’t need to know much about Minecraft and its features to be able to RP here. While Minecraft does inspire some of the lore, Mesalia is more about the RP than it is about Minecraft.

For example, some of the mobs that spawn in the game are a part of our lore, but the ones that aren’t in the lore are disabled or just ignored (e.g. creepers and witches). This extends to a lot of features in the game; things like enchanting, potion brewing, and end portals are disabled. We also have our own commands to stop mobs from attacking players so they can type their character’s actions and dialogue. At Mesalia, items are more like stage props, the map is more like a set, and mobs are like set pieces. What your character does is always typed, and is usually not performed in the game. For example, you don’t punch another player when your character punches their character, but you walk when you say your character does. In this sense, everything that’s in the game is more of a representation of what’s in the RP, rather than something you directly interact with.

Sorry if you already knew all of this, but I just wanted to make sure you knew what was going on; no one wants to scare you off with a bunch of foreign concepts and a different system. But if you’re still interested in applying, let us know. And if you’re not interested, then that’s perfectly fine. Do still let us know though, so we know what to do with your application.

Thanks Michelle, Torp sounds fine to me! I haven't been on a server with this level of customization before, but it seems really cool and fun, and really nice for someone like me who's just getting back into Minecraft. However, I am pretty familiar with the text-based actions for roleplay and I'm definitely interested in applying!

Sweet, glad you’re sticking around. Here’s your feedback:

1. We need your character’s exact age. There’s the implication that Aaron’s somewhere above being a teenager, but his exact age is required so we can work out if your character’s skills are balanced, and that the lore relation in his backstory lines up correctly with the timeline.
2. Your character’s personality requires more detail. While Aaron’s backstory implies some aspects of his personality, we need a more concrete, detailed description. Please include a prose description of Aaron’s personality; it can be another section of your application, or it can be added to the end of your character’s backstory section. Consider things like the character’s faults, ambitions and values. What’s he like in different situations? When writing this description, be sure to consider how Aaron’s life has shaped who he is.

3. Lore issues:
  • a) “...the fringes of the Forbidden Lands, but far enough to remain within the vicinity of the Middle Realms...” You seem to be confusing the Main Continent with the Middle Realm. The Main Continent is where all the lore events (i.e. the wars and slavery and the purge) happened, and across the ocean is the Forbidden Lands, which is where the RP is set (see the next point for more on this). Both these places are located inside the Middle Realm, which is like a dimension. Following this logic, you can’t be in the Forbidden Lands and not be in the Middle Realm. The name you’re looking for is the Main Continent, or the mainlands. Please revise your application with this information in mind.
    b) “He had decided to return to the Middle Realms … and here he was.” Following on from the last point, our characters live in a town that’s in the Forbidden Lands, not the Main Continent. Thus, your character’s backstory should end with him arriving at this town. Usually, people have their characters live in the Main Continent during their backstories, and then have them move to the Forbidden Lands, but starting in the Forbidden Lands is fine; he just has to move from one part of the Forbidden Lands to the current setting (which is just another part of the Forbidden Lands). Please also revise your application with this information in mind.

4. Skill issues:
  • a) Overall, your character’s skills need to be more realistic. You need to think about these skills in more of a real life context and less in a Minecraft one. For example, his hiding skill: being able to dig into mountainsides and underground involves mining knowledge in real life. Thus, in RP, this would relate to a mining skill, not a hiding skill. Furthermore, in a real-life context, hiding isn't quite a skill. A realistic alternative that doesn’t involve mining is shelter building, which is commonly included in survivalism. See this nifty skill guide for more. Please read the skill guide, then revise your character’s skillset according to this information.
    b) From the whitelist application thread:
    “Characters considered difficult to play
Thieves, murderers, villains, prostitutes and other types considered needing good roleplay skill to pull off we will rarely accept as someone's first character, if at all.”

We won’t deny a character with a thieving skill, however I personally recommend you don’t make it your character’s profession or focus. This is because RPing a thief is extremely difficult in this server, especially in the current setting; you and your character will soon learn that there’s not much to steal.

Basically, the issues in your application are mostly matters of detail and lore-confusion. Otherwise, it’s a smooth read. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them. And if you’d like a good example of what we usually accept, here’s one. That’s all, for now. Good luck.
